Namkaran Sanskar

Namkaran Sanskar is a traditional Hindu ceremony performed to name a newborn child. It is one of the 16 Samskaras (rites of passage) in Hindu culture and holds significant spiritual and cultural importance. The word “Namkaran” is derived from Sanskrit, where “Nam” means name and “Karan” means the act of naming.

Ritual Performed

  • Ganesh Puja: The ceremony begins with a puja to Lord Ganesha to seek his blessings for the child’s bright future and remove obstacles.
  • Havan (Fire Ceremony): A sacred fire is lit, and mantras are chanted to purify the space and invoke divine blessings.
  • Naming the Child: The father or Priest whispers the chosen name in the baby’s right ear. Often, the name is announced aloud to the family and friends gathered.
  • Blessing by Elders: Elders and family members shower blessings, and gifts are often exchanged.
